Control Your Mind
We often hamstring ourselves on a daily basis because we disrespect our most creative, influential and important resource...our minds! Our minds are the source of everything we have accomplished, or on the opposite side of the mental spectrum the cause of everything we have let slip!
In my experience as a success coach our minds are so malleable that we can put them to work for us in any aspect of creation or desire! However all to often we let our minds loose free to take the path of least resistance, choosing the easy route of focusing on negative influences or deciding that our goals are not possible. This then causes us to settle or succumb to negative/toxic understandings.
In a very insightful article entitled: Mittens for Your Mind, written by Jae M. Rang of Jae Associates; Jae M. Rang discusses the importance of controlling what we let enter our minds. Too often we are always focused on external precautions or taking care of outside business or what others are up to or may be doing but we let our guard don to our most crucial resource...our Mind.
Our Minds are the key to activating a new level of thinking frequency and enthusiasm, our minds can create anything we desire and it is when we attune our beliefs and behaviours with our thoughts...especially the positive thoughts that we begin to take our levels of success to an entire new level of effectiveness.
Jae M. Rang explains very succinctly that our minds are often left vulnerable to the most toxic elements being eschewed in society...and this is where we need to take a step up in responsibility.
In a second article, Open Your Mind, I really got great value out of how Dr Wayne Dyer encourages us to open our mind. Now although this may seem contradictory to what our first article encourages us to do, it is in fact in harmony with the great advice of the first article. What is so wonderfully explained by Dr Dyer, who is unfortunately no longer with us, is that we need to open our minds to growth and new possibilities that we have not been conditioned or prepared for. Our upbringing, education, culture and societal influences may in fact be the negative influences which are causing us to regress and increase our attraction to the negative influences and influencers out of misunderstanding
In my experience controlling our minds is a very challenging skill to establish however we can master it. Further to the two articles I would suggest the following three point strategy that has worked for me:
Make a decision today to increase your effort in controlling what direction your mind takes each day. This is most effective when done at the start of your day.
Although this will be a challenging habit to get, into you will soon see, that with persistence we are able to control our thoughts and have a greater say in the effect external influences have on us.
Focus on Abundance
Often our biggest obstacle to discovering true meaning is our own conscious limitations! We don't believe we can achieve so we don't begin the phenomenal creative process that exists in our imagination.
In my experience the human mind is automatically set to negative! We work harder on convincing ourselves that what is impossible needs to stay impossible...instead of making the mental shift to elevating our desires, our awareness and what we believe we can accomplish!
In an extremely though provoking article by Sandra Gallagher of The Proctor Gallagher Institute, titled A Simple Formula for Creating the Life You Want Sandra details a very straightforward yet extremely vital formula on how we can make a monumental shift in our lives. The formula describes the processes that we need to get ourselves immersed in: mentally, emotionally and spiritually before we can experience it physically.
By adopting this formula in our lives we begin to elevate ourselves beyond the preconditioned level of understanding that is in effect holding us back from living a life that can bring exponentially more fulfilment!
What is clear is that the formula is simple, yet setting new goals that match an elevated desire is the challenge.
Jim Rohn, in a brilliant posthumous article How to Access the Power of Ambition gives a wonderful lesson about, how our ambition can drive us into functioning at an accelerated rate. This new elevated level is one that would get us an ever increasing level of results. Our ambitions are essential in driving us to accomplish our goals, as it is our ambition that stimulates us to aske the correct questions everyday all day making sure that each thought, idea, action and discipline is directed towards our goal...direction determines destination! Ambition allows us to concentrate us on our goal focused actions and progressing our habits to be focused on successful, result driven actions.
Drawing the following certainties from the two articles and my experience in personal development and success coaching I have established the following 3 strategies to designing the life you deserve
Starting today take action on expanding these parts of your make up: emotional, mental and spiritual as these will elevate what you believe you can accomplish and you know what...you will actually start to accomplish!
As a student of success you may at times experience difficulties and set backs on your journey towards your goal; often inner resolve gets you through, however there are times when these setbacks seem insurmountable and cause you to want to throw in the towel.
In my experience as a success coach the most difficult aspect we have to overcome in our lives is when we get stuck, our results feel like they are spiralling out of control and we feel like we are moving backwards in life, here are 2 phenomenal articles that can give you insights into taking back control
In a brilliant Tony Robbins blog on Mind and Meaning entitled
WORLD SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL?
We are given insight in to the reality that is uncertainty in our everyday situation and the futures that we face.
Tony Robbins goes on to elaborate that fear is the inability to take control of external factors and that we should embrace the opportunities that are presented when uncertainty arises.
He goes on to further educate us that although we perhaps cannot control the situations that cause us fear but we can choose and control our responses to the difficulties that arise.
There is very succinct information on the importance of making a decision to take control and take a specific direction allows us to progress beyond where we get stuck!
In a supplementary contribution by Brian Tracy entitled
How To Stop Worrying: Take Control Of Your Life
Very practical, pertinent and straight forward advice is given to us to help us identify the cause of our cause of worry and to take control of our lives so that the factors that cause us to worry have a minimal effect.
The article doesn't dwell on the negatives of worry and how it can cause us grief, instead the article gets straight into the practical applications we can take to minimize the effect of worry.
This article is a great reassurance to know that establishing control in our loves is not a difficult strategy but can be broken down to practical everyday tasks achievable by anyone.
Integrating these two articles and my experience in personal development and success coaching I have listed 3 actions you should take today to regain control of your life and reset your focus towards achieving the goals and successes that will define a higher value in your life.
Starting today, make a decision to take control each day and make it everyday and you will get to the heights of success you want to achieve.
Life used to get extremely frustrating for me when I kept chasing my ever elusive goals that I knew would make my life and the life of my family more comfortable, more stable and bring an abundant measure of joy towards us.
However I kept chasing, kept working, kept exerting all my efforts to my goals but I just could not reach the end result I would like...THIS KEPT DRIVING ME CRAZY!
After a certain set of experiences where my efforts and potential did not equal output my family, financial and physical situation met with unmitigated disaster where I could not see a way out or any hope for better circumstances.
After many inquiries and searches for a better way to function, to figure out what was going wrong and why I had experienced such a devastating event I learnt a fundamental basic truth:
Its not what I do but my thoughts that make an immeasurable amount of difference to my results.
This may seem obvious buts it is a trap we all often fall into: more hours at work chasing the pay rise, more effort into getting an education, burning ourselves out to get ahead when in fact all we are doing is losing each and everyday.
The primary lesson that I learnt was that it's my Paradigm and the way I was thinking about all things that were determining my results! The conclusion: My results SUCKED, so the way I was thinking about things, looking at things and doing things...SUCKED!
Change was needed and needed now. I found help, I found out that I was not unique in my experiences and more importantly that there was a way out.
So a bit of a suggestion for you to go and try:
"its not the hours you put in its what you put in the hours" - Jim Rohn
We always have time for everything important!
There always has been and for the foreseeable future will always be 24 hrs in a day…nothing I could do will have ever changed that! It was having that fundamental reality refreshed and accepted that lead me to interrogate the following question:
“How can some people be super effective and turn an hour into millions and some people don’t even manage to engage a single cell?”
I began to think about the major time allowances I gave every day, and came up with the following 3 basic categories:
• The Time I give my responsibilities (work, family, medical, hygiene…)
• The Time I give to my leisure activities (entertainment, family time, holiday..), and
• The Time I invest in my growth (personal, financial, intellectual, mental…)
Each of the 3 basic categories is as essential as the other! When combined, a balance needs to be created that is essential to a progressive harmony and inner balance between each. This harmony and inner balance will determine HOW I will progress and grow as well as HOW MUCH I will progress and grow.
Determining my required harmony and balance is not an easy skill, however like all skills it can be developed with application. To start my process I had to ask some important questions and get very serious with myself when answering them. Questions such as:
• What priority am I apportioning to each basic time category? I at times felt the need to give the extra effort on unimportant tasks, task that would in fact detract me from where I wanted to ultimately end up. Focus on financial rewards and not the priceless rewards life gives to us such as family, mental and emotional peace attained when I switched myself off from work. At the end of every day I had to understand the value of everything I immersed myself in that day and was the sacrifices made worth it.
• What balance am I giving to each time category? It was very apparent that there was not balance and like an unbalanced wheel it’s only a matter of time before the instability throws everything out of whack. This started to happen when the results I was experiencing did not match my efforts and background…something had to give and it did!
• What are my goals that are driving my time commitments and time allocations? My first response to this was do I have goals and how Do I want to progress and grow beyond the manner of life I am living now? I decided that I Do I want more out of life and that I want to model myself around the super effective people that are living life on their terms…not someone else’s!
There are times when, we ask ourselves the right questions, our perspective begins to change dramatically!
Following a stern examination of my time application I started to put the results and findings to an effective use. I had to make sure that my time allocations moving forward were optimised to ensure that I get maximum benefit out of each and every day. Although not easy at first, with concentration and mental commitment, I managed to put a more structured and focused time management approach to how I want to live life and what I want to extract out of every second!

“Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days." - Zig Ziglar
No great accomplishment was ever fulfilled without its start!
When we explore any accomplishment great or otherwise, the nature of its start, in all likelihood would not have been perfect. In fact probably even far from perfect! At the start, all the intended benefits may not have been conceptualized in their entirety, an understanding of the finer points will not have been fully known and even how to achieve the end result would not have been comprehended!
However despite all these immediate, apparent and obvious obstacles; it was the start that allowed the specific vision, the awe-inspiring dream or the life defining goal to materialize.
The start is a specific point and this is always characterized by the ONE specific action that has to be taken to establish:
1. Momentum towards your goal to start
2. The foundation for all follow on actions that define how our goal will materialise
This may be writing the first word for your novel, taking that first picture on your journey to becoming a photographer, uploading your first website, making that first sales call or signing up to get that degree you always thought wasn’t the right time to get!
Whatever your goal, Greatness begins somewhere by doing something specific…we determine what that something specific is!
How we start is as much a critical factor to determining the rest of our journey! We need to have our inside aspects all good to go:
Expect only good things!
Have the faith to know you will accomplish your goal!
Put hope into every action!
Be courageous always!
Intensify the desire to succeed!
Develop a great attitude!
Make specific plans!
Decide to be victorious!
This determines our enthusiasm, resilience, how we sow and how we contribute to those we serve! How we sow is how we will reap!
The benefit of starting is that the sooner we start the sooner we know what we need. As we progress along our journey more information becomes available, the depth and perspective of the image of our goal becomes more clearly understood.
Our goals needs and requirements, its areas of development in order for it to manifest become apparent and understood through action!
Starting allows the quality of our initial plans to be examined and gives us the benefit of adapting, perfecting and increasing the detail for our plans as the desire for our goal becomes intensified!
Starting, no matter how humble or modest the start, allows the potential momentum to be achieved. Start where you are with what you have. You may not have all the answers, resources or capabilities but by starting these elements will be attracted to you as you progress.
As in everything the full picture may never be realised in the beginning or the magnitude of our potential may not be fully appreciated!
However as we reach each mountain top, or overcome each trial, the understanding of our existing horizons (or initial limitations) is overcome and we can begin to see further and further into the distance of our future potential and capabilities!
Reject excuses! Reject what if! Reject the naysayers! Reject anything that is not in harmony with your goal!
So as you finish reading, think clearly and specifically! What is it that you have been putting off? What actions have you been delaying that you know, when they are done, will bring a monumental and positive change to how you live your life?
Step out with courage and boldly put your dream into action! Do not worry about the how, START NOW!
Don’t let the start stop you from achieving abundance!
